What is Internet?

The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that use the standard Internet protocol suite to serve billions of users worldwide. Internet is one of the most useful technologies of modern times which help us in our daily, personal and professional life. Internet is widely used by students, educational institutes; scientist and professionals to gather information for research and general information. Businesses use the Internet to access complex databases such as financial database. The Internet is the largest encyclopaedia for all age groups. The Internet helps in maintaining contact with friends and relatives who live across different locations via Internet chatting systems and email software. Internet is also becoming a major source of entertainment for the general public. The Internet has continued to grow and evolve over the years of its existence. the most popular of which are Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer.


The Internet is not synonymous with World Wide Web. The Internet is a massive network of networks, a networking infrastructure. It connects millions of computers together globally, forming a network in which any computer can communicate with any other computer as long as they are both connected to the Internet.

Father of Internet?

Vint Cerf is known as a “Father of the Internet”. Cerf is the co-designer of the TCP/IP protocols and the architecture of the Internet. In December 1997, President Bill Clinton presented the U.S. National Medal of Technology to Cerf and his colleague, Robert E. Kahn, for founding and developing the Internet. In 2004, Cerf was the recipient of the ACM Alan M. Turing award (sometimes called the “Nobel Prize of Computer Science”) and in 2005 he was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George Bush.

History of internet

The history of the Internet begins with the development of electronic computers in the 1950s. Initial concepts of wide area networking originated in several computer science laboratories in the United States, United Kingdom, and France.

What is Protocols?

A protocol is a set of rules and guidelines for communicating data. Rules are defined for each step and process during communication between two or more computers. The Internet standards describe a framework known as the Internet protocol suite. This is a model architecture that divides methods into a layered system of protocols, originally documented in RFC 1122 and RFC 1123. The layers correspond to the environment or scope in which their services operate. 

World Wide Web

World Wide Web (abbreviated as WWW or W3, commonly known as the Web), The most widely used part of the Internet is the World Wide Web. is a system of interlinked hypertext documents accessed via the Internet. With a web browser, one can view web pages that may contain text, images, videos, and other multimedia, and navigate between them via hyperlinks. The Web has also enabled individuals and organizations to publish ideas and information to a potentially large audience online at greatly reduced expense and time delay. Publishing a web page, a blog, or building a website involves little initial cost and many cost-free services are available.
